Nelly win award for Best Hip-Hop artist on RTF Music Awards - 16/06/2004
There will probably be a lot of people angry about Nelly's latest win for in the Best Hip-Hop category. There were other rappers with bigger hits or more street cred this year. But even though it's been a fairly laid-back year for Nelly, he is again the winner, and there has to be a reason he was chosen once again over his more active brethren.

Nelly's win last year followed the release of the mind-bogglingly successful Nellyville and its lead single, "Hot in Herre," which also won a Grammy -- though Nelly, loving the Lou as he does, was probably just as happy for his local win as his national one (well, maybe not). Some of that success has carried over to this year, with the album continuing to sell and "Hot in Herre" still urging ladies to take off all their clothes in many of the east side's finest establishments. But all of that still doesn't explain why, in a year without a new album and with some young Turks hot on his pop-rap trail, Nelly was once again this year's winner.

Could it be that even though Chingy and J-Kwon have followed in his footsteps, Nelly is still the guy with footsteps to follow in? Like it or not, Nelly is the face of St. Louis hip-hop for many in this city and around the globe. And not only is he the biggest music star St. Louis has produced in a long time in any genre, he's also one of the proudest St. Louis natives ever -- has there been a Nelly hit without at least one shout-out to his hometown?

Though his profile has been lower this year, it's not as if Nelly hasn't been up to anything. He's released a record of B-sides and remixes entitled Da Derrty Versions, sold some of his trademark Pimp Juice, collaborated with fellow St. Lunatic Murphy Lee and the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy on one of last summer's most ubiquitous singles -- the undeniably catchy "Shake Ya Tailfeather" -- and searched for the perfect "Apple Bottom" to represent his latest venture, a line of blue jeans for young ladies with back. He's also worked hard on his nonprofit organization, Jes Us 4 Jackie, a group whose goal is to raise awareness in the African-American community about the importance of bone-marrow donation, proving that while Chingy and J-Kwon may have had this year's big hits, the voters have chosen the guy with the biggest heart.

News about new Nelly album Sweat And Suit - 09/06/2004
Superstar Rapper Nelly Makes History; Grammy Award-Winning Artist To Release 2 New Albums At Once

"Sweat" and "Suit" In Stores September 14th

Three-time Grammy Award-winning superstar Nelly will make musical history on September 14th when he simultaneously releases two new albums entitled Sweat and Suit. While he joins Bruce Springsteen and Guns'n'Roses, who have also released two albums on the same day, Nelly becomes the first rapper to join their exclusive ranks.

Conceptually and creatively, Sweat and Suit showcase the multi-platinum St. Louis native's diverse musical styles. "I had so much material that at first I thought about releasing a double CD, but then I thought it would be better to release two albums separately to show fans the best of both sides of 'Nellyville,'" says Nelly.

In describing how the two albums are different, he characterizes Sweat as having more "up-tempo club bangers that are more street-oriented songs like 'Hot In Herre,' 'Air Force Ones' or '#1,'" while Suit is more "'grown and sexy,' along the lines of 'Dilemma' or "Ride Wit Me.'" Both albums showcase Nelly's trademark melodic lyrical style that gives him a broad-based appeal. "When I first came out I was representing my city hard, now I'm trying to explain so much more. I think both albums show my growth creatively and personally," he adds.

"Flap Your Wings" is the set-up single from Sweat, and Time magazine says, "word has it that this Neptunes' produced track is in the same vein as Country Grammar and Hot In Herre, the rapper's previous summer hits." The lead single for Suit is "My Place" featuring the R&B singer Jaheim- who Nelly calls "the Teddy of our generation." In fact, "My Place" is a re-working of the Teddy Pendergrass' classic, "Come On And Go With Me."

As part of an innovative campaign to cross-promote the two albums at once, Universal Records plans an aggressive organic, street-oriented campaign for Sweat, leading off with "Flap Your Wings" and a more traditional set-up for Suit with "My Place."

Nelly first came to national attention when he released his 9x platinum-selling 2000 debut Country Grammar. In 2001, as a member of the St. Lunatics (which includes fellow group member Murphy Lee), Universal Records released the group's platinum-certified debut Free City. The next year, he released his 6x platinum-certified sophomore album, Nellyville followed by the platinum-certified re-mix album, Da Derrty Versions in 2003. Cumulatively, Nelly has sold close to 30 million singles/albums worldwide establishing him as one of today's top-selling artists. Sweat and Suit will be his third and fourth studio albums respectively.

Nelly Explains The Fine Line Between Sweat And Suit - 03/06/2004
Normally, Nelly can knock out an LP in a couple of weeks and be on his merry way. But when working on his upcoming double opus — the two halves of which together create the title Sweatsuit — he took some extra time. Thus, Nells had to push the release date back a month.

"That was to make sure everything was right," Nelly explained earlier this week, minutes after a performance with Murphy Lee at the "TRL" Beach House. "It wasn't that long ago that I decided to drop two albums. I went in [to the studio] to do one album and everything was coming out crazy, stuff was steadily coming out and sounding good. I was thinking of more and more stuff, and we came up with the two-album thing.

"The Sweat side is more up-tempo, I would say real energetic. The Suit side is more of a grown-up and sexy vibe. It's more melodic, if you can think of certain songs like 'Dilemma' and 'Ride Wit Me.' Something like 'Hot in Herre' would be on the Sweat side."

Despite Nelly referring to his double album as having two "sides," it's really two different albums coming out on the same day: September 14 (see "Tail Feathers Sore? Time To 'Flap Your Wings,' Nelly Says"). "You buy them separately," he noted. "You may just like one side, [but] the goal is that you'll like the whole Sweatsuit. But you know, whatever you like from Nelly is cool. Fortunately, enough people have been supporting me on both sides of my music, from the slower ones to the up-tempo, fast club-bangers. I'm trying to give people some of everything."

Nelly has two singles and two videos coming, one for each new album. The Neptunes-produced "Flap Your Wings" leads off Sweat, while "My Place," which features Jaheim, is Suit's initial cut.

"It was crazy," Nelly beamed about working with the Neptunes again. "Like I always said, I was fortunate enough to know the Neptunes before I had a record deal. [Working with them] is something that I've always been wanting to do, before I had a contract. Pharrell is my dirty. [And on 'My Place'], Jaheim, the brother can sing. I just needed that vibe. He was perfect to do it. The videos [are] gonna kinda connect: You'll see 'To be continued' and pick up where you left off."

After Sweatsuit, Nelly hopes to put out a St. Lunatics group LP at the top of 2005. "We're waiting on a surprise — if it comes through, it'll be big," he said.

He's also got a movie he wants to shoot, and in the meantime, fellow Lunatic Kyjuan is going to continue to shoot music videos (his latest, Murphy Lee's "Hold Up," is on the airwaves now), and Ali will soon record a separate group album with the Goodie Mob's Big Gipp.

Pimp Juice Goes International - 29/05/2004
Nelly may not have a hit record on the charts at the moment, but his Pimp Juice energy drink that caused minor outcries in the United States due to the name, is flying off the shelves in other countries.

Fillmore Street Brewery, the company behind the drink, reports that the Pimp Juice is selling well in the United Kingdom, the Caribbean Islands and Mexico.

According to representatives, Pimp Juice will also be sold in Australia, Japan, China and Israel by the end of next month. The Middle East, the Far East and Europe will also be stocked with the drink by fall of 2004.

“Fillmore Street is very excited with our current progress and predicts an even brighter future,” said Fillmore Street’s Co-President, William Wooten. “In less than six months, we have almost locked down national distribution and have started distributing worldwide.”

Wooten added that an aggressive marketing campaign for the summer was being planned and that the product would be featured in new music videos, online commercials and college and music tours.

“We will be a brand that changes the game,” Wooten said, noting that the drink is currently handled by 60 distributors in the United States, is sold in 32 states with national distribution expected by August.

Despite raising eyebrows and being threatened with boycotts when the drink was launched, Nelly’s Pimp Juice sold a million units in the first three months it was on the shelves.

Pimp Juice was also awarded the “Peoples’ Choice of Best Energy Drink” in the industry trade magazine BevNet and Vibe Magazine named it the best energy drink.

Nelly, Apple Bottoms And Publicist Being Sued For Libel - 26/05/2004
On May 18, 2004, LM and LR Enterprises, doing business as URBAN TRENZ, a cutting edge urban clothing store located at 3823 San Pablo Ave in Emeryville, California, filed suit in Alameda County Superior Court against Cornell Hayes, an entertainer commonly known (P/K/A) as NELLY, his clothing design company, APPLE BOTTOMS LLC and self styled publicist SAMANTHA SLAVIN for damages for trade libel, libel per se, intentional interference with prospective economic advantage, and for an injunction.

Vernon C. Goins, Esq., attorney for Lynn Reed, President of URBAN TRENZ, explained that the basis for the suit was NELLY and SLAVIN's wholly unwarranted press release, issued March 22, 2004, accusing URBAN TRENZ of conducting an "unauthorized, "false" and "illegal" model search. Contrary to the allegations of this press release, the model search was suggested by Apple Bottoms representatives, authorized by them, and conducted according to APPLE BOTTOMS guidelines. APPLE BOTTOMS simply changed its mind regarding the desirability of the model search after the fact, and is punishing URBAN TRENZ for not foreseeing its change of heart.

The unwarranted press release, which was widely distributed to television, radio and print media, has been harmful in the extreme to URBAN TRENZ. Mr. Goins states that the purpose of this suit is not only to obtain recompense for this blow to the URBAN TRENZ business, but also to deter such backhanded behavior in the future."

Release date push over - 27/05/2004
Nelly fans will have to wait a little longer for the two albums he's releasing simultaneously this year, but for now the rapper can at least offer up names for the discs, and soon he'll drop a first single from each.

Sweat will be the title of the grittier of the two discs, which is said to have songs for the clubs, the bedroom and the streets a la "Hot in Herre" and "Air Force Ones." And since the last time Nelly really busted out big-time was with P. Diddy and Murphy Lee on "Shake Ya Tailfeather," it's only right that he has a new set of instructions for his flock. Sweat's first single is called "Flap Your Wings" and features the production handiwork of the Neptunes.

Nelly's second LP in the double-dose offering has been christened Suit, and it's described as the more melodic of the discs, somewhere in the vein of songs like "Pimp Juice." Nelly has his pimp juices flowing on the lead cut from the album, a track called "My Place." The song is a hip-hop take on Teddy Pendergrass' 1979 baby-making ditty "Come Go With Me." Fittingly, Jaheim, who's drawn comparisons to Pendergrass, will be singing, "Come on and go with me, come on over to my place."

Nelly will shoot videos for both singles in the next couple of weeks. Sweat and Suit, now due September 14, had originally been slated for August 17
